Root Canal Therapy

Having a root canal is much like having a filling except that it normally requires more than one appointment. Root canals are necessary when the pulp (blood vessels and nerves inside the root) of the tooth is irreversibly damaged. Deep cavities, trauma (blow to the tooth) or cracked teeth are some of the causes of pulp damage. In order to save the tooth, the pulp must be removed from the root. This is done by inserting a series of very fine files into the root to effectively remove all of the pulp tissue. The canal is cleaned and disinfected and a temporary filling is placed in the tooth. The tooth is left to heal for a couple of weeks and then the canal is filled with a rubber material which helps support the tooth structure. In many cases a metal or plastic post is placed inside the canal for added support.

It is important to remember that even though the tooth is no longer vital, it is still susceptible to decay. Also, removing the nerves and blood supply of the tooth can make it more susceptible to fractures so it is strongly advised that the tooth be crowned to prevent that from happening.
