In Canada, oral cancer is the 13th most common cancer of the 23 reported cancers. The 5 year survival rate of oral cancer is 63% which is less than the survival rate for cervical cancer, melanoma and prostate cancer. Oral cancer can be successfully treated if caught at an early stage. If not treated early, it can spread to other parts of the body making it more difficult to treat. Common signs and symptoms to watch for are: sores in the mouth that do not heal within 2 weeks, dark red or white patches in the mouth, lumps on the lips, tongue or neck, a sore throat and difficulty swallowing.

Tooth decay is the 2nd most common cause of school absenteeism. It is 5 times more common than asthma in children 5-17. The bacteria that cause tooth decay can be transmitted by sharing a spoon with young children or licking their pacifier. It is preventable in almost all cases.

Did you know that our office uses digital x-ray technology which allows us to detect oral problems at the earliest stage possible thus preventing the need for more invasive, expensive treatment. Digital x-rays use as much as 50% less radiation than traditional x-rays.
